Slobering on the tourists...

Not much to report on for yesterday. The plan was to just stick around town and do some work on the boat and laundry and things like that. Breakfast was on the boat with just cereal.
Chris had gone uptown early this morning and came back and said there was a Farmers Market going on so we decided to go up and check that out. It was just Susie, Chris and I and we decided to take the dogs with us. As we were walking past a couple standing on the sidewalk, I hear this "That DOG just slobered all over my leg!" (you need to say it very up-ity). I quickly run across the street to get a picture of this infraction but this is all I got:
If you are the couple standing there and are reading this, let me know. One of the dogs does have a drool problem and an incureable disease.
We continued on to the Farmers Market:
The market was in a parking lot a few blocks off of Main Street:
And they had this bluegrass band playing in the corner:
Now that Mandolin player looks like he was really into it... wow.

There really wasn't much there but some craft type stuff. The only veggies were from the same stand I bought some from yesterday so we didn't get much. I did, however, find the little red boat in the harbor that is in every stinking painting of Nantucket:
We walked on back to the boat empty handed. As we came down Main Street, I noticed that the couple the dogs slobered on were still standing there. I was so happy to see this as we had a second chance to get some pictures. The man was on to me though as I was snapping pictures across the street... oh well...
I decided to do a few things around the boat. The Ships Chandlery at the end of the dock didn't have much but there is a marine store a few blocks away:
You can also identify it by the crooked window on the side:
John and I walked up there to get a few screws and some new fender whips. I got new fender whips from West Marine before I left and they are total crap. More on that in a minute. So here's John thinking he is looking all cool on the corner totally clueless the dog is taking a pee behind him:
Went to the marine store and the guy there said he could custom make some whips for me (he wanted to just show off his Marlinspike skills) out of stranded 3/8" rope. I went ahead and let him do that and went back about an hour later and picked them up. Here you can see how excited Philippe is about these new whips he is holding:
Here is a comparison with the one from West Marine.
As you can see, the one on the left was designed by a finance person who said "Make the whip 3 feet shorter and we can get a 30% decrease in cost-of-goods sold and make $300,000 more profit on fender whips this year." That finance person was then put in for a $50,000 bonus. After pissing off the customers, fender whip sales have now decreased 80% but that finance person has since taken his money and left West Marine and is now working for Porter Cable as Chief Financial Officer (big promotion) destroying that brand since Black and Decker bought them.
Here's a shot of the new whips on the boat:
Now there's a great "clover knot" (that's what everyone calls a "clove hitch" around this boat).

We do have a washer/dryer on the boat but it's one of these all-in-one front loading units (it washes AND dries). It works for towels and underwear but we call the thing the "wrinkle master." In fact, it balls up the laundry so tight and then dries it that underwear comes out in a ball the size of a tennis ball.... so we like to use the facilities at the marina. The laundry machines here are like $3.00 to wash and $3.00 to dry. Ouch! So here's a picture of Susie trying to cram 3 days of laundry into one machine:
I didn't get the picture of here jumping up and down on it. It was so bad she actually had to take some of the laundry back and re-wash it without soap because the soap didn't come out.

The kids walked uptown last night and got some burgers and fries to-go from someplace and I took Susie back to Pier 14 here on the dock for dinner. The same hostess we had the other night fit us in and was very nice... the place was packed. I had the Tuna (rare) and it was awesome (again). Got back to the boat and I was beat so I went to bed. Everyone else stayed up and watched a movie on the new TV system and are still sleeping as of 9:00 this morning.

Goldens aren't very particular about whom they leave with their slobber. They thing everyone likes a little bit of doggie slime. However, they won't slobber on someone who doesn't like them. They have their uppity moments, too. My golden retriever will slobber everyone, but if you disdain him, he'll avoid you the next time around figuring that such people are better suited to cats and choking on hair balls.

I think this blog is terrific, and should be required reading for everyone considering an extended cruise.

Gary's dry observations on the most obscure events (dinghy savaging power cords and dribbling dogs) are very entertaining, in that they strike a familiar chord for most of us. Turns out cruises are full of unpredictable events, some routine and some bizarre. With four kids on board, life can never be boring.

Weather events on the other hand, generate serious interest for most of skippers, and Gary's preoccupation with distant hurricanes is understandable.

I look forward to future updates, as I expect most of us do.
